Avs' Girard to enter program, cites 'alcohol abuse'

Colorado defenseman Samuel Girard, 25, who had been away from the Avalanche for personal reasons and did not play in either of their past two games, has left the team so that he can receive care from the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program.
